UGANDA NATIONAL PARKS

Uganda is a small but stunning safari destination blessed with diversity. Its 10 National Parks are a composition of the tropical West African jungle and the golden savannas of East Africa. Some of the parks are known for hosting some of Africa’s great game while others are characterized by species dwelling in the pristine canopies and other wildlife species that every vacationer would wish to encounter while on an African safari. Among the game that you would definitely find in these parks are the; Leopards, African Elephants, Lions, Buffaloes, Warthogs, Antelopes, Hippopotamuses, Rothschild’s Giraffes, Jacksons Hartebeests, Bushbucks, Zebras, Elands, Hyenas…. Apart from the game that roams the plains, the parks are flecked by gorgeous landscapes and idyllic streams such as Kidepo Valley National Park that boasts of a strong wilderness atmosphere offering remarkable Kodak memories to photographers, Murchison Falls known for its dramatic and exploding water falls; a test of the power of nature, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park whose impressively curved conical peaks are spread with snow, Queen Elizabeth National Park known for its stunning diversity of habitats and striking craters, its home to an impressive list of birds- 600 species.

Situated in the southwestern part of the country is the prestigious Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO heritage site known for its high number of the world’s great Apes; the Mountain Gorillas, and high number of the Albertine rift endemic bird species (23). Closest to it is the gorilla park of Mgahinga which is part of the greater Virunga conservation area that also protects the Mountain Gorillas and other endangered species like the Golden Monkeys.

In the western part of the country is the evergreen Kibale Forest National Park known for its density of primates on the African continent with over 1500 Chimpanzees, and other species like the L’Hoest Monkeys, Potto, Grey Cheeked Mangabeys, Vervet Monkeys, Black & White Colobus, Bush-babies and many others.

Others include the Semliki National Park known for its female and male hot-springs and regarded as a birders paradise premier for watching both the forest and savanna specials, Lake Mburo National Park known for wildlife viewing and birding with its wetlands offering refugee to swamp dwelling species, further in the eastern part of the country is Mount Elgon National Park rich in cultural and natural significance as well as offering tantalizing adventure to hikers.

The country’s savanna parks are premier spots for game viewing safaris characterized by wilderness action of predator and prey showdown, with the forest parks known for nature walks conducted to track wildlife such as primates, bird watching and exploring the diversity/ ecology within.
