A Life-changing adventure - All You Need to Know about Gorilla Tracking Experience

Deep in the heart of Africa, there lies primeval misty shroud forests with rugged terrain where old-world species; the Mountain Gorillas roam. Among its many natural and wildlife treasures, one experience surely stands out – the Gorilla trekking adventure. Gorilla trekking is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in the world, sought-after by many but limited to a few. Trekking offers a chance to encounter these prestigious and endangered creatures in their natural environment. These Gorillas are only found in two locations generally, the Virunga Volcanoes which spreads across Uganda, Rwanda and DR. Congo as well as Bwindi Forest.

This epic adventure is available in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga national park, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park. On the other hand, Uganda also offers another form of Gorilla adventure, the Gorilla Habituation Experience, see our guide.

Mountain gorillas are among the most endangered primates on the planet, with just over 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild and as such, gorilla tourism is a form of eco-conscious tourism with limitation on visitor numbers.

Preparing well ensures a safe, respectful, and unforgettable experience. The trek itself is a captivating adventure and experience that can never be given desirable justice by guide books or travel journals. In this – our guide to Gorilla trekking, we give you some hints about this monumental experience.

Planning / Preparation:

Start by booking your gorilla permit well in advance—these are limited and have high demand – as earlier mentioned, gorilla trekking isn’t a form of mass tourism due to conservation issues. We recommend booking your permit at least 3-months ahead of your planned travel date especially during peak season (Jul-Sep & Dec-Feb).  Uganda and Rwanda offer well-organized treks with experienced rangers/ guides and strict conservation guidelines. Choose a licensed tour operator who will handle all the logistics – from securing your permit, to transportation, lodging, and any other extras.

Physical and mental preparation are of paramount importance due to the nature and terrain of the gorilla highlands/ habitat.  Gorilla trekking involves hiking through steep, dense tangled and at times chilly slippery forest, sometimes for several hours before you encounter these Great Apes. Begin a regular fitness routine—walking, hiking, or cardio—to build stamina.

What to Expect on the day of the Trek:

All guests are required to assemble at the park headquarters/ reception area on the day of the trek by 7h30, here the responsible park personnel take you through registration, followed by briefing from the ranger on safety and gorilla trekking etiquette. There are various Gorilla families so groups of up to 8 tourists are assigned to one of several habituated gorilla families, with a guide and ranger.

Usually, trackers move a head of the visitors into the forest to locate where the gorilla family is and they’ll always communicate with your guide on where to meet the group. The trek can take 1–6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and other factors like pace of the visitors, and nature of the forest. Once found, you’re allowed one magical hour to observe and photograph them.

Etiquette and trekking Guidelines:

Please note; on a trek, you’ll always meet a habituated gorilla family that’s basically accustomed to human presence, however, keep in mind that this is wildlife and its behaviour is unpredictable so follow the guide

  • Maintain a 7-10-meter distance from gorillas
  • Children below the age of 15 are not allowed to go on a Gorilla trek
  • Speak softly and avoid sudden / un coordinated movements or pointing at the Gorillas
  • Never touch the gorillas—even if they approach remember they’re wild animals
  • No flash photography
  • Do not trek if you're sick—gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases like cold/flue
  • If you must sneeze or cough when you’re with the gorillas, turn away and cover your face.
  • Smoking, eating or drinking is not permitted while with the gorillas
  • Always follow the guide’s instructions
  • Never leave litter in the forest

The Experience, how it feels like

Gorilla trekking is a life-changing experience when done responsibly.Top of Form

Bottom of Form

The journey itself is captivating —trekking through misty shroud dense rainforest, beholding the scenery and sounds of the forest, and encountering various forest wildlife species like monkeys, birds and forest elephants spices the adventure. As you push through tangled vines and muddy trails, anticipation and anxiety build with every step – you get mixed feelings of course because you’re not sure what to expect. Then, suddenly, the moment arrives: a giant but gentle Silverback appears from the undergrowth, surrounded by his family. Watching the gorillas interact, and go through their life is such an emotional experience. It’s a connection that leaves most visitors in awe.

Contribution to Conservation

From critically endangered to endangered, Gorilla trekking plays a vital role in gorilla conservation by generating essential funding and raising global awareness. Visitors who trek to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitats pay permit fees, which directly support park operations, anti-poaching patrols, and community development. This financial support helps protect endangered gorilla populations by discouraging illegal hunting and habitat destruction. Additionally, gorilla trekking promotes local employment as guides, porters, and lodge staffs, offering communities sustainable income sources tied to conservation success. When locals benefit from gorilla preservation, they are more likely to support and participate in protective efforts. Trekking also increases global awareness about the species' plight, inspiring further conservation actions. Ultimately, responsible tourism fosters a strong link between economic benefit and wildlife preservation.

A significant portion of the permit fees goes directly to gorilla conservation and community development, ensuring that tourism plays a positive role in protecting these incredible creatures and the people who live near them.

Gorilla trekking is chance to reconnect with nature, to witness the fragile beauty of our planet’s biodiversity, and to contribute to its preservation. Whether you're an avid wildlife enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a travel experience that leaves a lasting impact, gorilla trekking in Uganda promises to be an encounter you’ll carry with you forever. So, lace up your boots, pack your camera, and prepare to meet one of our planet’s most awe-inspiring inhabitants in a setting that feels truly untouched by time.
