Checked and Excess Baggage
As a traveler, you must always be aware of the conditions for your checked baggage on your upcoming flight. Understanding the airline’s baggage policies is essential for a smooth journey. Packing a checked bag requires more than just filling a suitcase; therefore, the most critical factors are size, number of pieces, and weight, which vary by airline and class of service. Airlines have a fee structure for excess baggage limits, and it’s
important to understand how your airline charges, i.e., for extra weight or extra pieces.
Note: It's important to understand that checked luggage is stored in the cargo hold or under the aircraft and, in most cases, isn't accessible until the final destination.
There are basically two concepts to understand regarding checked baggage: the piece concept and weight.
Some airlines publish only weight in lbs (pounds) or Kgs, while others use both concepts; e.g., 2 pcs each 23 kg.
There are no universal standards for checked baggage. It’s always important to verify your airline’s specific limits with us or on their website (if booked directly or online) before you pack. Exceeding these limits results in excess or oversize fees, which can often cost more than checking a second bag. If you’re traveling and have baggage that exceeds the required limit, we strongly advise you to purchase extra baggage prior to your
check-in. However, some airlines, especially low-cost carriers, require that extra baggage be secured at airport check-in counters.
The biggest shift in recent years is that most airlines, especially on regional and domestic flights, now charge
fees for all checked luggage, except for some premium fares. These fees are almost always cheaper when paid online at the time of booking or in advance of your flight. Paying at the airport counter will incur a significantly higher cost.
Finally, we always advise you to pack smart. Never place essential medications, valuable electronics, important
documents, or jewelry in your checked luggage. Use a durable suitcase with a secure lock, and consider adding a name tag for easy identification. By planning ahead, you can avoid unexpected expenses and ensure your belongings arrive safely at your destination. There’s nothing more distressing than delayed or lost luggage.
