Currency and Forms of Payment
Understanding the currency and right form of payment for your destination is one step to planning a memorable trip.
Understanding Currency and Forms of Payment
Managing money is an important part of travel planning, and understanding currency requirements can save you time, reduce stress, avoid unnecessary costs, and ensure smooth transactions during your trip. While not a document like a passport or visa, knowing the conditions surrounding currency and payment methods is a vital travel formality.
Prior to commencing your journey, our travel advisor will provide you with essential information on the destination's official and other permissible currencies, as well as the payment and exchange rate conditions relative to your home currency. Typically, in developing countries, they primarily operate on cash transactions, whereas others widely accept cards and digital payment methods. This remains consistent for travel within urban centers and remote regions. We recommend carrying a combination of cash and cards for enhanced flexibility, and having a small sum of local currency readily available upon arrival (at the airport); however, please note that exchanging large amounts at the airport is generally discouraged due to higher rates. This may be vital for covering immediate expenses such as taxis or tips.
So, while at your destination, you will need enough cash for tipping, local markets, small shops, and transport, while credit or debit cards are more convenient for hotels, restaurants, and larger expenses. A more practical strategy is to use cards for hotel payments and major expenses, and rely on local cash for smaller daily purchases.
If your destination requires payment in foreign currency, arrange to exchange money before you travel or at official bureaus upon arrival. ATMs are available in many destinations, especially in cities, but fees may apply. Our advice: while in a destination, always ask your guide. Before you step out of the hotel, be sure to ask the hotel reception about the most convenient payment methods and the availability of financial services in the local area you intend to explore.
Foreign currencies can be exchanged for local currency or any other currency at the prevailing bank selling rate at the respective banks or at existing forex bureaus.
