Claiming lost Baggage

Imagine that feeling of arriving at your final destination, and you discover your baggage hasn’t arrived on the

carousel; it is a traveler's nightmare. Losing your luggage is stressful, but knowing the right procedure helps resolve the situation and significantly increases the chances of being reunited with your belongings. Your immediate action is crucial.

When you discover your luggage has not arrived at its final destination, before leaving the baggage claim area,

proceed directly to the airline’s luggage desk. Do not leave the airport without filing a report. An agent (airline staff) will create a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Provide a detailed description of your bag, including the brand, color, size, and any unique identifiers, such as a luggage tag or ribbon (Review our section for Checked Baggage). This reference number is essential for tracking your claim’s status.

Most delayed bags can be located within a few days and delivered to your hotel or home at no extra fee, or you’ll be required to collect it from the nearest airline location or office. Remember to keep your baggage claim tag safe; this will be your primary proof of ownership. Make inquiries about the airline’s policy on interim expenses; many will reimburse for essential items like toiletries and clothing if the delay is lengthy, though this depends on the situation.

Ensure your contact information appears on your luggage tag and inside the bag. Once home, monitor your claim online using your PIR number, or follow up with your airline contact or agent. If the baggage is officially declared lost after a set period, usually 20+ days, you’re entitled to compensation under international airline regulations, though the amounts may not fully cover your items. If you have receipts for any replacements made for your luggage, keep them because they may be required for reimbursement.

For an added layer of protection, we advise you to always consider travel insurance that includes coverage for lost or damaged luggage; this can provide compensation for the value of your belongings and for delayed purchases. Prompt, organized action is your best tool for a successful recovery.
