Traveling with Kids

What you need to know about traveling with Kids

Traveling with a child or children can feel a little overwhelming, but with the right preparations, the journey can be smooth and enjoyable for you, your family, and even fellow passengers. Airlines generally welcome children of all ages, but parents should be aware of those specific policies before flying; be sure to confirm them with us or the airline directly. A well-planned travel itinerary can make your vacation enjoyable.

Airlines categorize passengers under 12 as: Infants (ages 0–1 year 9 months, or under 2 years) and Children (those who haven’t reached 12 years). During the booking process, we always advise the airline of the children’s

ages. Children under two (infants) generally travel on a parent’s lap, usually at a discounted infant fare. Some parents may choose to purchase an extra seat with an approved child restraint system for added comfort and safety, while older children generally require their own seat. Many airlines offer priority boarding to parents with children or families, making it easier to settle in before take-off. Most airlines provide in-flight entertainment, child meals, and more.

We always recommend that travelers with children or families pack smart. A fully stocked carry-on is key. Children are usually entitled to their own carry-on and checked baggage, so use them. In that carry-on, pack essentials such as diapers, snacks, formula, a change of clothes (for both warm and cold environments), wipes, and entertainment like books and small toys. Pre-load tabs with games and kids’ movies to keep them entertained. You know what your kids like most, so pack their favorite items. Longer journeys can be distressing for them. Be mindful of liquid restrictions, though exemptions are made for baby food and milk after security checks.

Remember to arrive at the airport on time for early check-in to avoid a stressful rush. When traveling with children, consider carrying copies of their documents, such as birth certificates, as some airlines or security may need to verify your relationship with them. If traveling with children who aren’t biological, proof of guardianship is required, so we advise you to carry consent letters from the biological parents, along with copies of their identification.

For longer flights, we encourage moving in the aisle when it is safe to

do so. During the flight, help the little ones manage ear pressure during takeoff and landing with a bottle or pacifier, and keep them hydrated to minimize discomfort from cabin pressure.

By respecting airline rules and keeping kids comfortable, parents can ensure a stress-free and memorable flight experience. The golden rule is to be prepared and patient. If you’re unsure what to do or have doubts, always reach out to us before your planned flight. A simple error can ruin your long-anticipated

Unaccompanied Minors

With the growing trend of parents and guardians sending their children to travel alone for reasons such as fixed work schedules, attending parties, visiting relatives, and more, the aviation industry has seen many airlines provide special services for Unaccompanied Minors (UMNR). These services are designed to ensure young travelers are safe, comfortable, and well cared for throughout their flight. Traveling solo as a child can be a fantastic rite of passage, building their confidence and independence. However, ensuring their safety and

comfort requires knowledge of the appropriate procedures. Airlines have varying policies on UMNRs, so parents should familiarize themselves with the requirements before booking or choosing an airline. For bookings made through us, we will always take care of all the details and advise you through the steps.

Typically, children ages 5 to 11 can use the Unaccompanied Minor service, while those ages 12 to 17 may travel alone but can still receive assistance from the airline. It's important to note that not all airlines offer UMNR services, and some have specific age requirements. Airlines usually charge a service fee for UMNR, which covers dedicated staff to escort the child through check-in, security, boarding, and handover to an authorized guardian at the destination.

Parents or guardians must complete all required paperwork before the flight, provide identification, and clearly list the adult who will pick up the child at the destination. The receiving guardian must also present valid ID and match the name on the booking/UMNR form.

We advise you to always pack a small carry-on for the child with snacks, entertainment, documents, and medications (if any). You should prepare them by discussing the entire process, from staying with airline staff to what to do if they feel uneasy. Airlines have professional staff assigned to attend to the child during their journey, and this shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

Parents should also remain at the airport until the flight has taken off, as required by many airlines, while those picking them up at the destination must arrive early.

So, if you plan to let your child travel solo, we always recommend preparing early and giving yourself and the airline enough time to ensure your child has a smooth, worry-free travel experience.

You can use our UMNR checklist below to prepare;

  • Understand the airline's booking and policies
  • Confirm the airline’s UMNR age limits and rules
  • Reserve unaccompanied minor services well in advance

  • Confirm whether the airline charges UMNR fees and pay them. Some airlines charge it as an extra, while others may include it in the UMNR fare.
  • Complete Paperwork and Identification

  • Fill in all the necessary consent forms
  • Provide parent or guardian contact details and addresses for departure and arrival. Most airlines require ID numbers. Remember to carry the one used in the paperwork.
  • Ensure the child has all valid and necessary travel requirements, such as an ID/passport, visa, and travel insurance. We recommend it.

At the Airport

  • Arrive early for check-in and paperwork
  • Stay with the child until boarding. Spending time with them instils confidence. Remember to stay at the airport until the flight departs.
  • Ensure the child knows who will pick them up at the destination

What to consider in the Child’s Carry-On Bag

  • Pack some snacks and water for them, while not forgetting the airline policies on liquids
  • Pack some entertainment items like tablets with games, favorite child movies, and books

  • Share with them the contact details of the immediate point of contact at the origin and destination, and their travel documents
  • Consider putting convenience items and clothes, such as a change of clothes, jackets, or sweaters
  • Pack necessary medications, if any

At the point of Pick-up

  • The authorized guardian should arrive early at the airport with proper identification.
  • They’ll be required to sign the release forms
