Traveling with pets

Traveling with pets in today’s aviation industry is common; therefore, many airlines have positioned themselves to better handle it. For many travelers, pets such as dogs, birds, and cats are part of the family, so bringing them along on a trip requires careful planning.

Airlines allow pets to travel either in-cabin, as checked baggage, or as cargo, depending on their size, breed, and airline policies. Small pets that fit in an airline-approved carrier may travel in the cabin, while larger animals usually go in the hold.

Before booking your flight, always review your airline’s pet policy for requirements on carrier dimensions, weight limits, fees, and health documentation. Most airlines require a recent veterinary health certificate and up-to-date vaccinations. Some countries also have specific quarantine rules, so we advise researching destination regulations well in advance to avoid surprises.

When preparing your pet, ensure their carrier is comfortable, well-ventilated, and secure. Include familiar items, such as a blanket or a toy, to reduce stress. Avoid feeding your pet right before the flight to minimize discomfort. For long journeys, we recommend asking your vet for advice on hydration and anxiety management. As a passenger owner, you assume all risk of injury, sickness, or death of the animal.

Remember, airline staff must always follow strict safety rules, so arrive early at the airport for pet check-in. The

airline or its staff are not responsible if the pet is refused entry into a foreign country or during transit, so it’s your responsibility to ensure you’re aware of the policies for carrying animals into another country.

If the pet is accepted as checked baggage, it’s important to know that its food and kennel must also be transported as checked baggage, and excess baggage fees apply. For dogs accompanying sight- and hearing-impaired passengers, they’re usually accepted by the airline into the passenger cabin and mainly free of charge.

To enjoy your journey if you plan to travel with your pet as a companion, always plan in advance and inform us or your airline.
