For Canadian and American travelers, the typical vacation has lost its appeal. Another cruise, another all-inclusive resort - it all starts to blend together. What if you swapped the sound of slot machines for the rustle and dewfall of a montane rainforest? What if, in 2027, you stood just ten feet from a 400-pound silverback, gazing into eyes that reflect your own? It’s not just about trekking through the forest, it’s about the restorative moments that come with it - shedding extra pounds, relieving stress as you walk through an African forest or unwinding at a camp on the edge of a misty, rolling mountain forest, and so much more.
That is the reality of gorilla trekking safaris and vacationing in the misty volcanoes of Uganda and Rwanda. This is not a zoo visit-it is a primal encounter with our endangered cousins in their last sanctuary.
In this guide, we bring you some of the highlights you need to know as a Canadian or American traveler planning a Gorilla trekking vacation in Africa in 2027.
How to get there? Other Expectations for North Americans
Traveling to Africa is now easier than ever, with a wide selection of flights from major North American hubs and cities. The journey itself is part of the adventure, and the two most popular gateways for a gorilla trekking vacation are Kigali, Rwanda, and Entebbe International Airport in Uganda.
Where you choose to go will entirely depend on you, based on a variety and combination of factors, such as price, duration of vacation…. But wherever you choose, our in-house travel planners are equipped with the knowledge to help you plan seamlessly.
- Air travel from the US and Canada: There are currently no nonstop or direct flights linking North America with Kigali or Entebbe but there are several convenient connections through Europe, the Middle East, and Ethiopia (Addis Ababa). Major airlines such as KLM, Brussels Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines connect these regions to key cities in the United States and Canada.
These airlines also participate in codeshare partnerships with major North American carriers like Air Canada, Delta Airlines and United Airlines to connect travelers to and from hubs they do not serve. The ideal travel time, including transit times, range somewhere between 18-31 hours depending on factors like point of origin and connections. For longer connections, you can consider flight options through hubs like Doha or Dubai that offer STPC (complimentary accommodation for connection). If you plan your journey with us, before you book, we shall always assist with the most ideal flight option.
- Ground transportation & logistics: Given the length of flights from Canada and the US to Kigali and Entebbe, it’s a good idea to allow a day or half-day to recover from jet lag upon arrival. When you land, our guide or representative welcomes you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Throughout your safari or vacation, your guide will accompany you and see you off when you depart.
- Luggage: We recommend packing light and leaving expensive items at home. Most international flights from Canada and the US offer a baggage allowance of two pieces at 23 kg (50 lbs) each, but local flights and safari vehicles often have strict weight limits of about 15–23 kg (33–50 lbs) for soft-sided bags.
- Visas: Canadian and US passport holders need a visa to travel to both Uganda and Rwanda. Whereas North Americans can obtain a visa on arrival for Rwanda, be sure to apply at least a week or more before your travel date if your trek is in Uganda. If you need assistance, our travel planners are ready to help.
- Guide services: Your gorilla trekking safari is fully guided, and visitors arriving from North America, particularly Canada, from the French-speaking province (s) have the services of a French guide or interpreter. In Rwanda, French is popular, while professional guides in Uganda are also available.
- Health: Currently, a Yellow Fever vaccination is not mandatory for travel to Uganda or Rwanda. However, we recommend it, especially if you plan to visit more than one African country on your trip, as it may be required at your next port of entry. Visit your doctor or a travel clinic to discuss your Africa travel plans and check which vaccinations are recommended, such as malaria prophylaxis, hepatitis, and others.

What You Will Experience: The Trek
Imagine standing in a mist-covered mountain rainforest as a massive silverback gorilla emerges from dense vegetation. He pauses, looks directly at you, and then calmly resumes feeding with his family. Maybe a juvenile gorilla tries to come closer, only for her protective mother to gently hold her back. Few wildlife encounters on earth match the excitement, emotion, and privilege of spending time with these prestigious and endangered creatures.
It’s worth everything for a North American traveler seeking an extraordinary adventure vacation in Africa for 2027. What makes it truly special is the exclusivity; visitors are placed in small guided groups of 8-pax with a ranger.
Your day of the trek: Rise early at around 5:00 AM (we assume you’ve been doing your routine exercises to build stamina); you can decide to do some soft yoga or exercises. Proceed with your driver through the emerald hills of the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, to the reception areas. After briefing from the rangers, you enter the forest.
Expect a workout. Depending on the gorilla family’s location, you may trek for between 2 and 7 hours across muddy slopes, rugged-nettle-choked paths, and steep elevations (2,500m to 4,000m). Your fitness will be tested, but the reward is long-lasting. Porters are available in case you need one to assist carrying your luggage.
Trackers move ahead of your group and signal the ranger when they locate the gorillas. As you get closer, you’ll be reminded of the dos and don’ts while you’re with the apes. For one strictly enforced hour, you’ll watch juveniles tumble over vines and mothers nurse their young. There are no words - just the sound of your heartbeat and the gorillas’ low grumbles. Later, you’ll return to the starting point, receive your certificates, and head back to the lodge.
Which Country Is Right for You?
As a Canadian or American traveler, your choice of where to go for a gorilla trekking vacation from North America depends on comparing the two destinations: Rwanda and Uganda. Cost is usually the main factor, but other considerations include flight availability, your travel schedule, and the physical requirements of each trip. Canadians from French-speaking provinces may find Rwanda more suitable, as French is widely spoken there, but interpreters are also available in Uganda if needed.
- Rwanda: A small, stunningly beautiful country clad in a roller-coaster of emerald hills, it’s a generally more premium destination. Short drives about 2 hours from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, luxury lodges, and smooth logistics. Ideal if you have limited time (3-4 days) and prefer high-end comfort. Gorilla permit costs 1,500 USD, and average prices for accommodation per night per person range from 300-500 USD for midrange and 600- 2,000 USD for high-end variations.
It offers softer treks
- Uganda: Permits cost 800 USD, and treks here are more adventurous and demanding. Its main trekking destination, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, offers higher biodiversity and a raw, muddy trek. Rougher-massaging roads lead from smaller towns southwest of the country to the gorilla highlands. The journey from Entebbe or Kampala City takes about 9- 10 hours, while local flights take 2 hours. Combine it with a classic savanna safari for lions and elephants.
It's more affordable and mainly appeals to standard and mid-range travelers; accommodation prices range from 150- 300 USD for standard and 300- 600 USD for mid-range per person per night, while affluent North American travelers can also find their fit.
Permit availability and season
Permit availability is tightest during peak season (June–September and December–February). Planning now ensures you secure your spot before the global rush.
It’s also regarded as the best period for gorilla trekking generally because it's dry; trails are more accessible, and weather conditions are favorable. However, gorilla sightings occur year-round, making every season rewarding.
Beyond the adventure itself, every gorilla permit contributes directly to conservation and community development. Tourism revenue supports habitat protection, scientific research, anti-poaching initiatives, and local communities living alongside these remarkable animals. As a result, travelers become active participants in one of Africa's greatest conservation success stories. Mountain gorilla populations have recovered significantly over recent decades, thanks in part to responsible tourism and conservation partnerships.
As 2027 approaches, now is the perfect time for Canadian and American travelers to begin planning their dream African safari. Whether you choose Uganda's ancient forests or Rwanda's volcanic landscapes, gorilla trekking promises an experience that will stay with you forever. The opportunity to stand just meters away from a wild gorilla family, surrounded by some of Africa's most beautiful scenery, is more than a vacation - it is a life-changing journey.
